A Great UF Character (UF Character's Features)
What makes a great Urban Fantasy character? I love this question and I don’t think I’ve been asked it before on a blog tour! It’s also probably up to interpretation. Readers connect with books, or more importantly the characters on a personal level. What one reader may love about a character another may loathe.
For me a great Urban Fantasy character is a strong female, slightly flawed as a human being but continually fights to overcome those shortcomings. She’s more bullets and octane than leather and lace but takes on an alpha male the same way she takes on an alpha villain. With each new challenge our heroine will dig deep to find the strength necessary to survive whatever the author has thrown at her.

When I created Maurin, I unknowingly gave her a lot of my flaws- issues with self esteem and scars from unresolved family issues that never seem to go away no matter how many years have passed and just enough stubbornness to get her into trouble. Thankfully I also gave her a little wit and a snarky attitude to counter act it. And of course the common sense to surround herself with some pretty amazing friends. I’ve thrown Pagan Goddesses, demons, witches, vampires and wolves Maurin’s way and she always rises to the challenge. Trained in hand to hand combat, guns and now a blade, she’s well equipped to handle them all. That’s not to say she won’t make mistakes. I think every Urban Fantasy character will continue to make mistakes throughout their literary lifetime. Just like the authors who write them. It’s what the characters do to make up for those mistakes that make them great!

I was born and raised in the Baltimore Metropolitan area but my family is originally from Rhode Island. I spent summers in New England with my grandparents, which probably sparked my fascination with Salem, MA. I started writing fictional stories and poems in middle school. In fact I had notebooks and notebooks full of incomplete stories and poems. One of which I managed to hold on to and is safely stashed in a box under my bed. When I was in seventh grade I entered a poetry contest in the back of an Archie comic and won, after that I was hooked on writing after that. Amazingly it took almost two decades to find a voice for my snarky, ass kicking heroine Maurin Kincaide and complete my first length novel. Meeting the love of your life and raising three amazing children together must have caused a rift in time because I still can't believe it's gone by so quickly. I'm fortunate to have a loving and supportive family who don't mind sharing me with all the other people in my head.
