That was a joke Jocelyn use to say to her teammate in
training camp. Today, many of those she befriended in camp are dead. Desperate to
keep her two sisters-in-arms alive, Jocelyn is willing to throw herself into
any challenge. Sadly, that's going to be harder than she thought, because
Ophelia is slowing going mad and Patricia is just a normal human who just
happens to be an incredible sniper... but still just normal.

With the war between the Northern Alliance and Keynosa
leaving both of their lands in ruins, Jocelyn's and her team are finally poised
to win and end the war for good. But, a new weapon, one that can instantly stop
even a super-soldier with a single shot, has hit the battlefield.
Together, Patricia, Jocelyn and Ophelia are sent on a
mission to destroy this new weapon and their enemy is willing to throw all they
have to stop them. These living war machines are in a race against two enemies,
but which will destroy them first? The lethal new weapon from Keynosa or their
own inner demons?
What struggles is your heroine dealing with in Fallen
Sun?
Hi, and thanks for the interview. It’s great to be given the
opportunity to discuss something I created.
Okay… Jocelyn Martinez. The heroine of Fallen Sun’s biggest
struggle is really centered around her desire to keep her sisters-in-arms safe
during a very bloody war. Ophelia and Patricia, her fellow soldiers, are both
much younger than Jocelyn, so in many ways she feels a sense of responsibility
for these two ladies.
Patricia is not a super soldier and has she’s already been
injured. Jos kind of sees that as a failure on her part and seeks to make sure
nothing else happens to her. Ophelia, who is a super soldier, is suffering from
a very common side effect of the process that transformed her and Jos into
super-soldiers, which is mental decline. Most of the super-soldiers that are
dealing with this side effect aren’t violent, but some do become violent and
extremely dangerous. Jos worries that this could happen to Ophelia.
Finally, Jocelyn discovers that their enemy in this war has
developed a new weapon that’s capable of killing super-soldiers with only a
single shot. With this new weapon as well as other new weapons, the Keynosians
are trying to make a come back and win the war. Jocelyn refuses to see this
happen.
Where is your story set, and why did you pick this place?
Fallen Sun takes place in a fictional world that’s very
similar to our own. The war is being waged on a continent one could liken to
the Americas. Jocelyn Martinez is a citizen of the Northern Alliance, a country
very much like the United States of America and the Keynosians are from the
Southern half of the continent, which may remind some people of South America
as it has large forest areas and even some rainforests.
As a writer, I enjoy creating new worlds that are not too
far from what we’re all familiar with. It’s fun for me because these new worlds
are similar enough to what we know, enabling me to make political and social
statements, but different enough to not be bogged down with real-world nuances.
What scene did you especially like writing?
The scenes I really enjoyed writing were the ones that
played with the three main characters’ relationships with one another. In my
relationship with women I know I learned a heck of a lot about the differences
between how men and women relate to one another as well as how social
expectations influence how we think about ourselves. As a father of a young
daughter and son (twins!), I really try to understand how they – especially my
daughter – may perceive the world and respond to it. Plus, it was great to have
my wife and other female friends point out flaws in how I was addressing the
females in my writing. I truly believe this newfound understanding will make me
a much better writer overall.
Are there other books in this series? If so how many?
Also are there more planned?
I prefer writing standalone books, but I also wanted to play
in this world just a bit more. So, my first novel was Sectors, which takes
place 75 years after Fallen Sun but doesn’t require Fallen Sun to understand.
Even so, Fallen Sun can be considered a prequel to Sectors which addresses the
offspring of these super-soldiers and how the Northern Alliance addressed the
Keynosians after winning the war.
FYI, it’s not really a spoiler for me to say the North wins
the war as Fallen Sun doesn’t hinge on who will win but what’s happening to
Jocelyn personally.
What did you do to celebrate when you finished writing?
Celebrate? Finishing a novel is just the beginning for a
self-publisher! But, I should bring more joy to the completion of the process.
When I finish the next book, which will end the series, I’ll do a quick happy
dance. :)
What book are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran.
Nowadays, I tend to read books that are classics. It’s always helpful to read
what the masters wrote. It’s a big help for me to see what is possible. The
Prophet is teaching me that you can tell a story and still have powerful word
play. So, choose words wisely and with thought and meaning. It can only enhance
the work.
Are you working on a new book? If So What and When Can We
Expect It To Be RELEASED?
Yes, I am working on another book. I expect to complete the
final story in the Fallen Sun world by early next year. But, I’m going to need
to find a new editor as the one I used for Fallen Sun has closed the doors of
her business, so I can’t give a solid release date.

I am scheduled to appear at the Santa Fe Comic Convention on
October 19-21, 2018. So, if you’re in town, stop by and chat! I enjoy talking

writing and what I’ve learned and continue to learn in my writing journey.
