Between the Pages Interview for The Gingerbread Lodge by Vicky Burkholder’s Blog Tour

What books did you read as a child?
Nancy Drew mysteries
Horse books like “Misty of Chincoteague” and “Black Beauty”. If it had a horse, I read it.
Fairy tales, fantasy, science fiction books like “A Wrinkle in Time” or “The Forgotten Door”

How has your life changed since you began writing?
I can’t say that it really has except that I get to spend more time bringing my fantasy and science fiction worlds to life instead of just reading about other worlds. Oh, and I have a lot of writer friends now who “get” me. 😊

Do you listen to music while you write?
Yes. But nothing with words. I tend to sing along with songs with lyrics. When I’m working, I listen to Classical, New Age, or other soft instrumental music.

What’s been your favorite moment as an author?
Holding my first printed book in my hands. There were other highlights – getting my first contract, seeing my name on the cover for the first time… but holding that book. That made it all real.

Out of all of your characters, who is your favorite?
A silly little man named Betzl from my first book “Akashante” (no longer in print). He wasn’t even supposed to be a character. He was a servant for an evil king. But he had other ideas and ended up being a hero. I loved that character – and still do.

What do you want readers to take away from your books?
A smile. Although bad things do happen in my books, they should come away knowing that good things do too – and especially when the right people come together in friendship and love.

Do you have any interesting dreams or goals?
I have interesting dreams all the time, but I don’t think that’s what you mean. My goal is to write the next book. To have people like it and want the next one…and the next one… etc.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Pretty much where I am now. Writing. Reading. Enjoying life.

As her alter-ego, Vicky has multiple homes all over the universe. She looks human - for the most part - but when she starts writing about characters being able to move things or flicking fire from their fingertips, or changing the course of rivers, people tend to get a little freaked out. She found the one guy out there in the universe who loves her for who she is and they've been together forever and raised four wonderful (now) adults. Her career includes work as a technical writer/editor, a stringer for the local newspaper, and an editor and copy editor for various publishers. At various times in her life, she has been a teacher, a secretary, a short-order cook, a computer specialist, a DJ, and a librarian. When not editing or writing, she can be found in the kitchen creating gluten free goodies for her family
